The fourth night held by the Asian Music Circuit at Café Oto, this time the instrument of focus is the Mouth Harp, or Jews Harp. Three acts, three different styles and sounds from around the world:
English Folk on the Mouth Harp: Michael Wright
Similar sounds: Didgeridoo and Throat singing, Mouth Harp playing from Siberia and other countries – Jonathan Cope
Traditional Indian Music, Mouth Harp + percussion: Kandiah Sithamparanathan.
Michael Wright
The leading performer, historian and enthusiast of the Jew’s harp in the United Kingdom. His expertise with playing this melodic, uncommon, yet historically important musical instrument is stretching the repertoire to its limits, both as a folk accompaniment and as a classical centrepiece. His research into the social history of the instrument is ensuring that the full scope of the Jew’s harp’s contribution to trade and entertainment is recorded. And his enthusiasm and talent for performing, including comedic interludes, well-known and seldom-heard songs, is helping secure Michael Wright recognition, not only in the UK, but internationally.
Jonathan Cope
Having studied with several well-known international players and Australian Aboriginal Elders, Jonathan has been teaching all levels of the didgeridoo for the past nine years. A lifetime fascination with rare and unusual sounds has also led Jonathan to seek many vocal techniques and instruments that can be used to soothe body, mind, and soul. Scientific studies have confirmed the many benefits of music and sound, particularly their ability to combat stress and allow the body to self-regulate and heal itself. Having studied for many years with leading exponents in these varied techniques. Jonathan now also offers tuition and workshops in various styles of Mongolian / Tuvan 'Khoomei' throat or overtone singing, chant, mantras, and the use of jews harps, Tibetan prayer bowls, crystal bowls, frame drums, fujara, bells, gongs, chimes, amongst others.
