PICASTRO

Canadian group Picastro craft beautiful, ethereal songs which escape their own structures to develop and soar through passages of unusual instrumentation and shimmering textures. Liz Hysen’s subtle, unassuming voice provides an understated focal point which is nevertheless resonant with difficult emotions and startling poignancy. At times reminiscent of the soporific lo-fi feel of Autolux or the shambolic intimacy of Movietone, Picastro expand their arrangements to effortlessly take in avant-garde elements whilst successfully conveying an emotional edge which is exquisite almost to the point of pain.

"Ostensibly a vehicle for singer-songwriter Liz Hysen, Toronto based Picastro weave her songs into an abstract framework of extended, moody soundtracks.” - THE WIRE

Wild Dogs in Winter

Wild Dogs in Winter centres around the songwriting duo of lead vocalist Rhys and main guitarist Luke, which the band expand into beautifully-constructed, tragically majestic arrangements. Effervescent, contrapuntal guitars, skeletal drumbeats and sparse electronic percussion are by turns reminiscent of low-fi luminaries Hood, Low or Slint. The ‘less is more’ aesthetic is often taken to the point of austere minimalism, serving to further emphasize the melancholic humanity of Rhys’ captivating voice, and the dark lyrical webs he weaves.

'Sleepy languid thoughtful beauty. Every sound considered, every brush stroke, every pen mark, every delicate glitch and string plucked... everything. Simple art, simple music, beautifully clever.' - ORGAN MAGAZINE

Shoes and Socks Off

With a voice full of human warmth and experience, an intricate but lucid guitar style and an informal performance manner, Toby Hayes captures and weaves together memories of ephemeral moments, fleeting fragments of speech and privately-observed gestures into startling snapshots of personal joy and anguish. The singer-songwriter tradition is transformed by Toby into a means for quietly but firmly sticking two fingers up at the musical establishment in favour of a more intimate, simple and direct mode of expression.
