A Hawk and a Hacksaw (often abbreviated to AHAAH) is a folk band from Albuquerque, New Mexico, currently signed to The Leaf Label. The band consists of percussionist Jeremy Barnes, who was previously the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel and Bablicon, and violinist Heather Trost. The music is inspired by eastern European and particularly Balkan traditions, and is mostly instrumental with occasional vocals, shouts and cheers. The band has toured with The Olivia Tremor Control and Beirut. During its CMN tour of the UK in 2007 it was accompanied by the The Hun Hangár Ensemble.
For their fourth album A Hawk And A Hacksaw reunite with Hungarian troupe The Hun Hangar Ensemble, recording in various locations across the globe, from Budapest to Devon and all the way back to the band's home in Albuquerque. The core duo of Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost bring not only their own compositions to the table on this outing, but also turn their hand to rearranging traditional folk songs from Eastern Europe, Israel and Turkey. Despite their multicultural roaming, Trost and Barnes have devised a very unified body of work in Délivrance, achieving a kind of unique nationless hybrid style of their own (in a similar fashion to their old colleague Zach Condon of Beirut), taking in spirited, high tempo dances like 'Hummingbirds', scratchy old romances like 'Raggle Taggle' and Kurt Weil-esque jaunts like 'I Am Not A Gambling Man'. The presence of the Hun Hangar Ensemble means that these bustling recordings are loaded with energy, folksy authenticity and a real sense of musical community. There's also some incredible musicianship on show - particular credit is due to the tremendous Kalman Balogh, whose wildly fluent cimbalom playing really sets the record alight. A terrific musical journey towards a kind of half-real, half-fantasised East, Délivrance is a real standout album for A Hawk And A Hacksaw. – boomkat on Délivrance
